question for guitar players…?

can someone plz explain what the tremolo arm is for and what it does? i’ve had my electric guitar for a few weeks now and i still don’t know what its for

it screws into the base of the guitar and then when u playing u push it downwards towards the board. the result is a distorted wobbly sort of sound as the strings change in tightness. if u ever played guitar hero on playstation/xbox u will c the guitar on that does the same. hope this helps
