How do i fix a guitar pickup?

I recently purchased a Gibson sonex-180 deluxe guitar. but once I assembled it and plugged it in Idiscovered the bridge pickup was not working. I brought it to my guitar teacher and he helped me find that a wire from the coiling was broken. he told me I could just solder it. with that I have 2 questions.how do I solder it properly and how do i get the piece of fabric off.

Hello, Joe! If the broken wire is one of the tiny wires coming from the coil itself to meet with the larger wire at the solder termination on the pickup, I would not advise your tackling the job yourself. Coil windings are very fragile, and require the utmost in care when handling. Take it to a competent shop for repair. On the other hand, if it is one of the wires leading from the pickup to the selector switch, it can be easily soldered back in place on the pickup, using a low-power (25-watts or less) soldering iron. You should not need to take the electrical (fabric) tape off to make this latter repair, unless I misunderstood where the break has occurred (please be aware that if the protective tape is not removed very carefully, you can easily damage the windings).
