Guitar Knob Set

My guitar’s volume knob affects the tone too much. Why?

I realise that the volume setting should affect the tone to a certain extent but lately it seems that turning the tone knob to 0 won’t really the the tone to 0. I remember that a couple of months ago this wasn’t the case. If I want less tone I have to really turn down the volume. Is there a way to make my volume knob control the volume alone and leave the tone to the tone knob?
Also, when I turn the volume to 0 and tone to 10 I can still hear myself playing through the amp; I have to turn both knobs to 0 if I don’t want to hear anything coming out of the amp. I’m guessing something’s wrong with the pot/cap of either of the knobs.

You’ve got some bad wiring. The guitar needs to be rewired, and probably some components need to be replaced.

The whole volume/treble thing can be easily fixed, there’s at least three different ways of doing it that I know of – the treble mod, some arcane wiring, or installing on onboard buffer circuit or preamp (the most complicated of the three).

I would suggest taking it to a qualified guitar tech and seeing if that’s their diagnosis as well. Ask them to fix it, and if you have the money, ask them if your guitar needs a setup – action and intonation. If it needs it, get it – it’ll make your guitar a little easier to play and help keep your neck straight and your guitar in tune all the way up the neck. Very important!

A good setup can make even a crappy guitar play like a much more expensive instrument (although, as my drummer says, you can’t polish a turd – not to say anything about your guitar, though, i’m not familiar with it).
