Fender Deluxe Stratocaster
Replacing Fender Stratocaster neck… precautions/ advice on this?
I will be attemping to swap a Deluxe Powerhouse Strat neck for a Highway 1 Strat neck.
I want to make sure I am not damaging or warping either neck in the process.
I want to make sure I don’t mess up the string action too much. Im switching from a meduim jumbo fretted neck to a regular jumbo fret neck, so im sure there will be some minor adjustments.
Any suggestions, advice, things to avoid?
Hello! Since you are swapping within the Fender family, the width at the heel should be consistent at 2 3/16-inches; however, make sure that the distance from the body mating surface to the top of the frets is the same between the two necks. If the DP neck base is significantly thinner (more than 1/16-inch), you may need to use shims in the body neck pocket to make up the space; if thicker, expect to either shave some material from the heel, or hope you can raise the saddles enough to allow for proper action. When either removing or installing a neck, grip it and the body together tightly as you remove or install the four screws and backplate. Always move the neck perpendicular to the body (straight up from the face of the body); there is a very slight taper to the neck heel, and if you pull it straight out (in-line with the pocket opening), you may chip the opening of the body neck pocket. Snug up each of the backplate screws; then for final tightening, go cross-corner. Don’t attempt to adjust the truss rod until the guitar is fully assembled with strings installed. If adjustment is required, do it in 1/4-turn stages. Loosen the strings slightly if correcting for a neck bowing inward, just to take some of the pressure off while turning the truss rod screw clockwise.
