Do cheaper guitars generally have a tougher time staying in tune?

I bought a $50 electric guitar package recently (guitar, gig bag, 6w amp, etc.) for the sake of learning. I have to tune the guitar CONSTANTLY. It’s so bad that, sometimes, when tuning from top string to bottom, that the low G will actually already be out of tune by the time I’m done with the high G.

First, how old are your strings? They should be changed about once a month for proper intonation and staying in tune. I change mine every week or two, but I’m playing every day and gigging every two weeks. If your axe still goes out of key, then by all means look for an upgrade. The problem with ANY guitar, regardless of cost, is that they don’t come “out of the box” already set up. You need a decent guitar tech or luthier to adjust and smooth the frets; check the neck; adjust the action (string height-to-fretboard); and set the intonation. THEN most quality made guitars sound to their full potential. Find a good music store/guitar shop within reasonable distance; you’ll be glad you did. Having someone you can talk to, bounce ideas off of, and fix any problems you encounter along your musical journey beats the living hell out of catalog retailers. By the way, Ibanez is one of the “best bang for the buck” guitars around today. If you heard that they were hard to keep in tune, 1) the owner had old strings, or 2) the guitar wasn’t set up by a tech. You can’t believe the difference a good set up will make with a guitar, whether you pay $50 or $5000 (actually, it’s more important on the costlier model). If you can’t purchase a decent axe for about $200 (Ibanez; Washburn; Epiphone) you need to look elsewhere.
