Good Metal Guitar PPickups?

I’ve been playing acoustic guitar for about two years, and i’m planing to switch to electric. I’m planning on getting an epiphone or a maestro SG because i’m on a tight budget. I like playing metal, so I was wandering what kind of pickups i should use. I know EMGs are good for metal, but i’m not sure what the difference is between active and passive pickups. Could someone explain please?

How to answer this question… I’m not actually going to focus on the pickups. First of all, if you’re going out and buying a guitar, you should know that they come with set stock parts. You can change them if you want to, but if you’re going out to get an Epiphone guitar, I doubt you’ll get one with EMGs. Now, if your intent is to go out and buy a mediocre guitar and then good pickups and switch them, I’d suggest just increasing your budget and buying a better guitar. Everything about the guitar comes into play when you’re looking for performance. Everything from what type of wood the guitar is made of to what kind of screws you have in the guitar. I’m not kidding with this. Also, if you get an Epiphone, you’ll be wanting to move up fairly shortly after getting it, so just wait a bit until you can raise the budget a little bit higher. I’d suggest getting a Jackson guitar, though, because everything about them is geared towards playing metal. Ibanez is good, too, because they’re extremely versatile.

The main difference between active pickups and passive pickups is that passive pickups are much more convenient. Active pickups use electronic circuitry while passive pickups are wire wrapped around a magnet. Inherently, active pickups are better, but require a power source. They can also modify the sound of the guitar. And they’re louder and have a clearer ring than passive pickups. I, myself, prefer passive pickups, but to each his own.
